Introduction of Protein
In this lesson, I provide an overview of protein introduction.
- What is protein?
- Why do we need Protein?
Protein is derived from the Greek word πρώτειος (proteios), meaning “primary”, “in the lead”, or “standing in front”. Protein is a large organic molecule that is essential primary macronutrient that provides energy to all living bodies, including unicellular and multicellular. (Macronutrients are a type of food that body required in large amounts). It can be found in every part of our body e.g. skin, hair, muscles, eyes, body organs, bone, even fingernails, and blood. It is present in all types of cells and comprises over 50% of their total dry weight (normal weight without extra fluid in the body). There is no life without protein. It is essential for the structures, movements, transportation, metabolism, regulation of the body, growth, and many other body functions.
